Cognitive Abilities Test

Dear Parents and Guardians,

During the week of April 18th, 2017 your child will be administered the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). This is a screening measure that will be administered to all 3rd and 4th grade students. The CogAT provides a snapshot of your child's abilities in the areas of verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal functioning. The verbal battery assesses verbal inductive reasoning, problem solving, and verbal comprehension. The quantitative battery measures general abstract reasoning skills, particularly inductive reasoning and specific mathematical reasoning skills. The nonverbal battery assesses inductive reasoning skills. The nonverbal battery differs from verbal and quantitative measures in that it does not require the student to use information gained from other experiences to solve problems. This is just one piece of the data that school staff will review as a component of multiple criteria used to determine if further instruction is necessary in planning for your child's educational program. If you would like a better understanding of this assessment, you can find the information from the publisher at http://www.hmhco.com/hmh-assessments/ability/cogat-7. If you have any questions please contact Kelly Basmagian at kbasmagian@byron.k12.ca.us.

Thank you,

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear DB Families,

I'm sending this letter to you as a plea for your help in ensuring the safety of all our students and staff.  Please abide by the following guidelines to ensure good traffic flow and safety for all:

  • CURB LANE (in front of office) is for unattended car drop offs – you may get out of the car
  • MIDDLE LANE is for attended car drop offs – you may NOT get out of the car
  • OUTSIDE LANE is for passing through only - NO drop-offs and NO stopping from this lane.
  • Please leave the house a few minutes earlier so you’re not rushed, and your child is on time to class. Plan on getting to school by or before 8:30
  • Drive SLOWLY at all times:  5 mph or less
  • PULL OVER TO THE SIDE and all the way forward before dropping off your child
  • Have your child cross ONLY IN THE CROSSWALK
  • Do NOT stop or park in the fire lane on Willow Lake Road
  • Red curb lanes are fire lanes and must be kept clear at all times

I have been in contact with the sheriff's office, as well as the CHP, and they have promised to be here as much as they can to help enforce the law and keep our students safe.

Many thanks, in advance, for working together with me to ensure the safety of all of our students and staff.

Sincerely,

Pierre Laleau
